Full story below:
After a full day of running errands, I realized that I did not have my tablet. It wasn’t in the car, it wasn’t in the house… it wasn’t anywhere. I back-tracked through my day, and the last time I was sure I had it was just after I had grabbed breakfast, at a busy local eatery. Somewhere between my breakfast and my car… my tablet had disappeared.
I activated Prey by texting the tablet my secret phrase “Chinese tonight?”, and almost immediately I had a report. The tablet was at a business about five minutes from where I had stopped for breakfast.
I gave the tablet a few minutes, before texting my ultimatum: “Return the tablet to [the restaurant], and I’ll pick it up tomorrow. Refuse, and I’m calling the police.” I informed him/her that the tablet was GPS enabled, and then texted my tablet the address where it was located.
I never got another report from the device.
The next morning, I wondered if I had scared off the thief, but called the restaurant just to check. As luck would have it, I must have scared them just enough… the owner told me a man had dropped off my tablet, and that he said someone “would be by to pick it up”.
I got my tablet back within 24-hours of losing it, all because it had Prey installed. I was ready to go into work the next day and shut off the services, and call it a lost-cause, but not so! Prey returned the tablet to me safe and sound.
I wiped the device, just in case, and changed all my passwords, but I’d rather have that little inconvenience as a result of my carelessness, rather than having to replace the whole tablet!
