Time to pack your bags, load the car, and travel a few miles to share Thanksgiving with loved ones! But hey, you can’t leave your gadgets behind.
Any holiday is a good excuse to take a few days off the desk, but you’re obviously taking some gadgets with you! Whether it’s your laptop, your daughter’s tablet, or all of your smartphones, it’s quite tough to leave them behind for a few days; and gadget-full holidays always pack fun situations. Let’s recap the security basics.
Layers of Protection
Woops, your daughter forgot her tablet at your aunt’s house; oh look, the kids downloaded a bunch of crap on your laptop!; or hey, your smartphone kind-of-died after a nice bath in cola. Avoidable? Certainly! There’s three layers you want to cover on all devices before hopping on the car for a few hours:
Step 1: Physical Protection
Whether you take a plane, bus, or car, you want to keep your gadgets safe & sound in rugged cases. It’s as easy as browsing Amazon for a bit, and checking out what ZAGG, Spigen, Supcase have to offer!
You can find prices as low as $12 bucks, and as high as $120 for shock-resistant cases. And even if they do look cool, you can get rugged protection without the typical military-grade look. What’s more, ZAGG and Spigen have been working on sleek and super thin phone cases.
Step 2: Malware Protection
Security 101! We hope you already have an AV like McAffee, Bitdefender, or Norton. We hope you keep up to date. But more importantly… we hope you keep an eye on what your gadgets are being used for during the thanksgiving-mayhem.
How you can up this layer a bit? Parental control, active monitoring, and clean-up duties. Not only the users change, together with the usual behavior, but so does the network; so it’s best to prevent, and reassure afterwards by running a few scans before your devices come back home.
Step 3: Preventive Monitoring
Preventive monitoring might sound… a bit redundant. But in a nutshell, you want to keep an eye on your devices at all times to check where they are, or to know if something happened to them. This goes for the devices you took, and those you left at home and out of the Thanksgiving celebrations.
We can aid with Prey in this bit! Either with a Free account, or one of our Pro plans if you’re a really-gadgety fella’. In a few minutes you can have all your laptops, tablets, and phones up in our platform and secured against theft or loss. Set up a Control Zone at your home, and one where dinner takes place, to make sure your devices don’t leave the premises without you knowing.
Good to go? Then move on and start packing. Remember to take that thing they asked you to cook, and enjoy your day off!
