How Prey Anti-Theft Helped Farmer Recover Stolen Goods

Although Prey Anti-Theft is an app intended to recover lost and stolen phones and laptops, a chilean businessman got creative — and used it to recover sacks of stolen produce.

When chilean businessman and land-owner realized his sacks of rose hip production were being stolen, he decided to get creative to prevent from being robbed again.

This is where Prey Anti-Theft comes in — really expanding the meaning of that “Anti-Theft” on our title.

It only took a cheap but trustworthy smartphone that would host Prey and boom! A low cost tracking device was born, ready to protect the land owner’s sacks of rose hip.

The businessman downloaded Prey into a low cost smartphone and hid it inside one of the sacks, waiting for them to be stolen. As predicted, the thieves took the sacks, not knowing that Prey was already tracking their location and that the police and land owner were onto them.

He immediately set the phone to missing mode, and with the chilean police by his side, he started tracking the device’s -and the rose hip’s- whereabouts.

Lo and behold, Prey worked its magic: sending reports, pictures, locking the device and revealing the thieves’ exact location. This allowed the businessman and the Police to locate the stolen goods.

“Prey sent us a signal that revealed the device was in a forest near the warehouse. We tracked it down and that’s when we saw people riding a cart who immediately fled when they saw us, leaving behind the sacks they were trying to steal.”

Actually, installing Prey on a low cost device is a great idea to use as a tracking source for any property: keeping a charged cellphone hidden in your car, for instance, could be a smart way to protect it.

Check out some low-cost but reliable smartphones like LG L20, Samsung Pocket and Alcatel One Touch C1.

We want to hear from you— what are other creative uses of Prey you can think of? (like our friend Fernanda, who needed to protect her bike)

Before we start, I want you to know that I’m one of the guys in charge of writing the awesome user-submitted recovery stories you read weekly on our blog. That fact could make you doubt every word I say, but please understand that this is a real story. We’re not making this up to show that Prey works, because we all know how well it does. We’ve been granted a presidential award

preyproject-award

Last friday we were invited to a special event in Chile’s Presidential Palace. The man in charge, Sebastián Piñera — aka. the President — along with the Minister of Economy, Pablo Longueira, granted three awards to companies considered outstanding from a poll of over fifteen hundred.

Turns out we were one of them.

Piñera — whom you might recall from the famous episode of the miners being rescued — gave us an award for being the most innovative company of the year.

Yup, that’s right! Keep on reading if you want to see the team shaking hands with the big guy.
