Way back when I was on stumble upon and came across Prey. It looked pretty cool so I figured I might as well get it even though I’d probably never use it. Fast-foward a year or so. It’s spring break at my university so I decided to head to my parents house about 30 minutes away for the weekend. All was fine till I returned to my apartment and discovered my macbook was missing. I was outraged, distraught. Everything for school and personal life was saved on the computer and I knew I had little chances of recovering it.
Feeling desperate I did a google search on “Macbook Tracking” or something of the sort. I came across and Prey and realized I had downloaded it in the past. I didn’t want to get ahead of myself but I was excited that I had a lead. I reset my forgotten password, change my device to missing, and waiting for Prey to work its’ magic. Unbelievably, I got the first report within 15 minutes. I was stunned to see a friend of mine staring into the computer. I call this girl “Shady” because there was always something sketchy about her. I sent her a text message or two asking her if she knew anything about the missing laptop but she denied and criticized me for accusing her. I pretended to believe her and headed to the nearest police station. Once there, I presented the officer with the printed report and his exact words were “Thanks for taking care of my job for me”.
He then headed to her house but there was no answer. He called her and left a voice mail stating she had 3 hours to call him before she’s charged with felony theft. This is when Shady made a desperate attempt to contact me and present with one BS story after the other trying to prove her innocence. I told her about the evidence I had on her and she realized she had to call the officer back. At the end of the day I got my laptop back and Shady has a felony theft charge to deal with.
