MDM Spotlight Nº2: Tidy up with Advanced Search & Labeling

Advanced_blog.pngSpotlight number dos! There’s no Mobile Device Management without some organization and tidiness.

Coming up on this spotlight, our Advanced Search & Labeling features. The second key milestone on our Mobile Device Management (MDM) package. Without it, using our upcoming feature, Mass Actions, wouldn’t be so easy!

The Summer Release Continues

You’re probably an expert in Control Zones already, so now it’s time to dust off your shelves and organize your assets. Can’t manage tons of laptops, phones, and tablets if you can’t tell them apart.

Wait, doesn’t MDM ring a bell? Control Zones? Nope? Then you might want to read the part 1 of this Summer’s Release Spotlight!

In a nutshell… We’re launching Mass Actions later this month, the crowning feature of Prey’s mobile device management tools, and we’re going through each function to see how they work and complement each other as anti-theft and management solutions.

Tag, Group, Find, Repeat

Let me introduce you to the dynamic duo: Advanced Search & Labeling. They are a must-have in MDM for any manager that wants to move forward with an organized deployment.

The Advanced Search feature provides a robust search bar that lets you filter your devices by their technical attributes, from the device type or its operating system, to its MAC address and its CPU model. There are 19 criteria available, software and hardware wise, and each subcategory is automatically detected and added.

The most common attributes are also available as tags on the left bar, giving quick access to frequent filters like operating system and device type.

Labeling, on the other hand, is the make-your-own criteria tool. Check the devices you want to group up, and hit the Labels button to create a new tag. For example, “Marketing”, to identify a sector’s devices. If want to add another device to the label, follow the same process but instead of typing a new one, click Labels and select an existing one.

Each device displays its labels under its name on the list, with an X on each tag in case you want to remove it from that group.

Synergy in Offense

Remember on our first article, when we talked about the needs that drove this releases? One of them was improving our defense with a greater offense. Well, this duo adds up to the anti-theft formula with a better coordination between our functions, making sure your reaction is as quick as possible.

Let’s say you have 200 computers on your panel, and you receive an alert that 5 of them got stolen today when someone broke into the Sales office. There’s basically two outcomes:

The “Oh Crap”: You open Prey’s panel, ready to try our new Mass Actions feature by launching a Lock… And you have to look for each device, one by one. Hey at least you got the names, if you used Control Zones…

The “Got It”: You open Prey’s panel, create a Mass Lock and filter the device list by the Sales label you created, but hey, you also know that they took MACs only, so you also mark that device attribute thanks to the Advanced Search integration.  A few clicks later, you’re done!

See why we say MDM features work better together? But, once again, theft isn’t the only issue in sight. Management is still one of the three letters in MDM, and Advanced Search & Labeling serve that purpose well.

Day to Day Management

Organization goes a long way in daily management, and keeping stuff visible and identified marks the difference between an easy to use management panel, and chaos itself.

Segmentation: Which office does that device belong to? Is that a computer for students, or teachers? Is it a company asset, or an employee’s personal phone? Identify, group, and label!

Current Status: Labels can also reflect a device’s situation to help managers administer laptops and tablets that constantly change users. Group up computers that are “Under Repair”, or keep track of tablets that are on a “Student Field-Trip”.

HW/SW Changes: With the devices’ attributes at hand, it’s easy to check up on technicalities that might need to be addressed. Like listing all Windows devices that require a specific software update.

Advanced Search & Labeling is a simple concept, yes, but it’s heavily crucial for mass management. Efficiency is key, and these tools make sure you take the most out of all our MDM features.
