Why We Removed The Online Panel App From The Mac App Store

We have decided to retire the panel app from the Mac store, but you can still utilize the online version of the panel at our website!

Some Apple users might have noticed that we have recently removed our Online Panel application from the Mac App store.

This application provided the same functionality as the Online Panel that the one you can access at our website, but in a desktop application format, exclusive to Mac. It worked as a ‘visor’, so to speak, another point of access to the Online Panel for users to administer their devices and use Prey’s tools.

Why we removed it

We were contacted by the Apple team behind app revisions, which is a standard process of upgrading and updating any app in the store. Most of the times, they follow up with technical or visual requirements that need to be adjusted prior to launch.

The application itself was launched in August 2016 and up until now, we updated it continuously through Apple’s services without any issue.

This time, however, we received a different request. Apple’s team wanted our Paid plans to be included in the application as In-App-Purchased, and charged through their store.

The application itself didn’t involve a subscription per-se, and didn’t charge any fee, neither provided access to these subscriptions.

Anyone who had acquired a paid plan with pro features through our website could utilize their Pro features, but otherwise, our commercial plans weren’t offered or available through the app. Once again, it worked as a mere ‘visor’ of the user’s panel.

We decided that it was best to retire the application from the Mac store indefinitely.

Due to Apple’s decision, we wouldn’t have been able to update and continue to improve this application, and the quality of our service is non-negotiable. To the users who utilized this app.

  • You can continue using if it is installed (no further updates incoming).
  • Or access the Online Panel through our website as usual.

Apple’s review process left a sour taste in our mouths, with requirements that appear to be bias at times. Overall, we disagree with their enforcement efforts, which tied our hands up and forced us to choose between committing to Apple commercially, or leaving.

It’s a goodbye, for now! Thanks to everyone who used and enjoyed this app, and we are sorry for the inconvenience. We invite you over to the web version of our Online Panel, where you’ll be able to manage your devices and use Prey without any limitations whatsoever.

Like we said, the retirement of the Online Panel app for Mac isn’t necessarily definitive. If the context that took us to this decision changes, or we find a future for this application that aligns with Apple’s demands, we will return to the store. Until then!
